Benefits and Qualities
Essential oil of bitter orange is considered a stimulant for the appetite, apart from its calming and sedative qualities. Because it is mildly astringent, incorporating it into facial creams is beneficial for revitalizing the skin, bearing in mind always that exposure to the sun must be avoided.
Production
Essential oil extracted by cold pressing of fresh rind of bitter orange, citrus aurantium L.ssp aurantium (Rutaceaes).
The Plant
After the flower (Neroli), the leaves, and the young fruit, the mature bitter orange comes to the time when it, too, must offer up its essence. It's found in the external layer of the rind, called the flavedo, and all the better if the white parts which separate the rind from the pulp are as thin as possible. These zests are not distilled. The essence is cold-pressed by way of simple presses. The exploitation of the bitter orange is a treasure of know-how and illuminates the history of the Mediterranean in the character of a very happy day.
