The Plant
From the equatorial forests of India, pepper has emerged to conquer the planet. Alexander the Great introduced it in the West and, very quickly, its success was such, and its possession so precious, that it became a medium of exchange along with gold and silver. It was also desirable booty: Alaric's Visigoths hauled away 5000 lbs. of pepper during their pillage of Rome. It's clear that pepper is one of the rare universal elements, a veritable common denominator for humans at every latitude.
