Botanical Name
Apium graveolens / L.
Benefits and Qualities
Celery essential oil is a tonic - as much in the nervous system as in the digestive system. Its diuretic effects and, consequently, its aid in eliminating toxins and purifying the blood have been known since Hippocrates. It is recommended for calming painful menstrual cycles and, in massage, it soothes rheumatism and arthritis.
Production
Essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of crushed ripe fruit of apium graveolens Linnaeus cultivated (Apiaceaes).
The Plant
Celery grows spontaneously throughout Europe. Well before being cultivated it was known in Antiquity as wild ache. Its aroma and the characteristic form of its leaves made it a table decoration for the Greeks, while the Romans did not hesitate to tress crowns from it, as they did with laurel. But it took some centuries before celery would become known not just for its medicinal qualities but for its gastronomic merits and as a perfume for salads and soups.
