Details

Botanical Name

Dillum graveolens / L.

Benefits and Qualities

Dill essential oil belongs to a group of oils that are gentle and free of toxicity. Thus it can be used confidently with young children. It is a stimulant and an anti-spasmodic digestive of the highest order which shows its strengths in cases of liver, gall bladder, or even kidney problems. In blends dill essential oil can have an interesting anti-depressive effect.

Production

Essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of the upper parts of anethum graveolens l.

The Plant

Dill is sometimes confused with fennel. The two plants are in fact related, regardless of their differences in size and growing style. While fennel is wild, dill is found in France as a cultivated plant. Originating in the Orient, it was used by the Egyptians and the Romans. Theophrastus writes of the gladiators dousing their bodies with dill oil before combat. More serene is the vision of a field of dill swaying in the breeze: joy for the eyes, the heart, and the nostrils.

Caution

Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep away from children.
