Benefits and Qualities
Levisticum root essential oil is useful in cases of food poisoning. It is a detoxifying oil which stimulates the liver and gall bladder. It combats psoriasis and is not without interest against bacteria and parasites.
Production
Essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the roots of levisticum officinale Koch (Apiaceaes).
The Plant
Prized during the Middle Ages, levisticum root was well placed within the imperial gardens of Charlemagne. Medieval herbalists knew its reputation, already established in Antiquity, by way of Asia Minor. After being neglected for awhile, levisticum root found its way into gastronomy by way of the celebrated ""Maggi"" broth, of which it is a primary constituent.
