The Plant
Cinnamon sparked the imagination of the Ancients. A certain amount of confusion between two species of cinnamon only adds to the aura of mystery which surrounds this tree which grows in the tropics. Plenty of legends, often perilous and magic, dramatise its harvest. It is credited with the capacity to set oneself afire, as the Phoenix, in whose nest, by the way, cinnamon is found. In fact, from highest Antiquity, cinnamon seems to assume the very character of exoticism, the fragrance of Elsewhere, precious above all.
