The Plant
Sclarea sage is a very pretty plant that grows wild in the Midi of France, of the same family as Dalmatian sage. It's latin name, ""salvia,"" clearly indicates its relation with good health. Whether dalmatian or sclarea, sage enjoyed the reputation of being a panacea from the Middle Ages through the 18th century. No monastery was without a patch of it, and it dominated as a pillar of western herbal traditions.
