Origanum majorana / L. (Majorana hortensis Moench)
Benefits and Qualities
Marjoram essential oil is used as an anti-depressant because it is an excellent neurotonic, appropriate for re-balancing the nervous system. It also possesses heating qualities that can ease painful menstrual cycles. Nonetheless, intensive usage should be avoided in cases of severe low blood pressure, because it can produce drowsiness. Synergies: lavender officinale, lavandin super, red and yellow mandarin, thyme linalol, geranium.
Production
Essential oil obtained by hydrodistillation of the flowery stalks of origanum majorana L. (Labieaes)
The Plant
A close cousin of oregano, marjoram is differentiated by its fragrance, which borrows nothing from thyme, and by its properties. What's more, it comes from further away than oregano: Southeast Asia. Both, however, are currently cultivated in the Mediterranean basin, as much for their culinary uses as for their therapeutic benefits. It is true that marjoram, for the Ancients, was a symbol of happiness and well-being.
Caution
Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes. Keep away from children.
