Botanical Name
Melaleuca Viridiflora
Benefits and Qualities
Niaouli essential oil is an antiseptic and a major antibacterial agent. It is used not only to fight bladder infections but also for respiratory troubles and catarrh. Biochemically close to cajeput, niaouli essential oil is easier to use because it is more gentle, especially in dermatological applications.
Production
Essential oil obtained by steam distillation of fresh leaves.
The Plant
Niaouli is from the same family as tea tree. It grows in New Caledonia, where its bark serves as the covering for the faré, the traditional home of the kanake. This shows the extent to which niaouli has been closely linked with the daily life of these island peoples. Used time out of mind for its therapeutic qualities, niaouli is processed to draw out the essence of Goménol - name of the Caledonian village where the extraction is done.
