The Plant

Native to Indonesia, nutmeg has nourished commercial enterprises for centuries. Arab merchants dissimulated about its geographic origins for a long time, as did the Portuguese in the 16th century. Aware that nutmeg was the second most sought-after spice at the end of the Middle Ages, they knew that a monopoly on its trade would confer considerable benefits. The Dutch and the French fought over its exploitation before the Americans, in their turn, entered into the game for love of the nut.

Caution

Avoid contact with eyes and mucous membrances. Keep away from children. Use with care - at elevated doses nutmeg exhibits signs of toxicity.
