The Plant
Sandalwood originated in India, and it's not surprising to find it mentioned in the Vedas. Ritually delivered to the flames, its smoke would mix with that of the incense and, like this other essence, sandalwood assists with the need for spiritual elevation. In Myanmar (Burma) sandalwood oil and rose water purify the body and the spirit by washing away sins. Impermeable to insects, sandalwood has served cabinet makers and decorators. It is as useful for worldly furnishings as for the adornment of temples.
