Aside from aromatherapy, there are several other uses for essential oils in the home. When diffused, their marvellous fragrances create an agreeable atmosphere, an ambiance; they establish a personality and enhance well-being.

They also have many practical uses: to clear tobacco and animal odors, to keep pushy cats at bay, to eradicate perspiration odours in linens, to disinfect, to repel insects…
Essential oils are not greasy and do not stain. Precautions should nonetheless be taken when using absolutes or more viscous oils.

Living areas and bedrooms:

Purify the atmosphere by placing several drops of essential oil into an electric diffuser or a ceramic diffuser.

Beds:

Before retiring, spray two drops of lavender or orange onto a pillowcase, handkerchief, or bedsheet. Your body warmth will diffuse the perfume, bringing peacefulness and ease of slumber

Rugs and sofas:

Diffuse 2 drops of peppermint or citronella

Curtains and furniture:

Apply 2 drops of black pepper or lemon on each to keep cats away

Bathroom and toilets:

Diffuse or drip 3 drops of eucalyptus or tea tree.

Floors:

Several drops of lavender, lemon or thyme added to cleaning water will perfume the home and disinfect the floors.

Laundry:

All of the citrus and flower oils (alone or in combination) are particularly adapted for perfuming linens.

Dryer:

Place 5 to 7 drops of an essential oil or blend onto a cloth or flannel and start the dryer. The laundry will retain a delicate perfume.

Ironing:

Add 2 or 3 drops of essential oil into the water reservoir of the iron to infuse the linen.

Insect repellant:

- In an electric diffuser (for a 30 sq. metre room), place 7 drops of cedarwood + 5 drops of lemongrass + 5 drops of lavender + 3 drops of geranium
- Another mixture: 7 drops of cypress + 7 drops os lemon + 3 drops of lavender + 5 drops of cedarwood.

Protection against moths:

In cupboards, place a perfumed cushion or « anisac » infused with a mixture of 5 drops of cedarwood + 5 drops of cypress.

Protection against ants:

Fill an atomiser with 500 ml of water, + 20 drops of peppermint + 10 drops of lavender. Shake well before use.

Protection for plants:

To repel or eliminate ants or aphids: atomise two or three times per day with a solution of 500 ml of water with 15 drops of lavender + 15 drops of tea tree + 5 drops of red thyme. Shake well before use.
