How to diffuse

Diffusion in the atmosphere

When you perfume the rooms of your home, your apartment, or your work space with essential oils you create an olfactory décor, you give them personality. In all the novels – and not just in Proust – ambient fragrance evokes memory! The simplest method is to use an electric diffuser which can be used according to the size of the room.

The air we breathe is often polluted and contains bacteria. Essential oils diffused into the atmosphere of the home purify the air we breathe and, thanks to the work of the lungs, pass into our organism to better protect us from pollutants.

Placed near the computer ventilation fan with Orange , they relax; in the toilet with Arvensis Mint , they purify; near the bed with Eucalyptus Globulus or Lavender Aspic , they ease breathing...

The heat diffuser

The heat diffuser consists of a candleholder or electrical circuit the heats a small dish. After lighting the candle or the electric circuit several drops of essential oil are added to the water in the dish. The oil blends and evaporates little by little as the water heats. The perfume spreads through the air and creates astonishing well being.

The electric diffuser

The easiest method of all. The electric diffuser pulses the air and gives a continuous diffusion, a dynamic ionisation. An infinity of micro-particles of Essential Oils spread through the air, perfuming the room, destroying tobacco and cooking odors much more effectively than a deodouriser which only masks bad odours for a moment. The drops are so finely atomised that they rest suspended in the air.

Thus, you inhale the perfumed air of the room and obtain the effects of purification and prevention while destroying microbes and malefic germs. The diffusion time varies according to need, but watchfulness is required to prevent saturation of the air.

Diffusion in an individual home

The ideal is to have a diffuser equipped with a timer: one hour of diffusion per day will suffice for a five-room home. The diffuser can be connected to a programmer with sequences of 15 minutes for the house; in the bedroom, 30 to 60 minutes before getting up or going to bed; 10 to 20 minutes in the kitchen while foods are being cooked.

Prudence must be exercised to avoid using a diffuser near a baby younger than two years old, due to the risk of irritating the eyes, mucous membranes, or respiratory passages. In a baby’s bedroom or playroom it is sufficient to run the diffuser for 10 minutes before or after the baby is there to purify the air. For children from 2 to 12 years of age, 10 minutes before sleeping will suffice. The duration can be augmented progressively according to age.

For adults, 30 minutes works well. The diffuser must not be actuated all night long. Note that certain essential oils have aphrodiasic properties; they have the effect of stimulating sexual desire. In modern life, where stress spares no one, the diffusion of essential oil encourages the harmony of sexual exchange.

Diffusion in public areas.

A diffusion period of 5 to 10 minutes per hour is advised

To invigorate

In offices, workrooms, and libraries, diffusion of essential oil acts to stimulate intellectual activity, concentration, and memory.

To stimulate

In shops or galleries, the diffusion of essential oils enhances the harmony of commercial transactions; a healthy atmosphere helps the customers to choose.

To relax

In beauty parlors, massage rooms, tanning clubs, places of relaxation, diffusion of essential oil assists with the process of unwinding.

To prevent

In gymnasiums, workrooms, waiting rooms, doctors’ offices, corridors, or personnel offices: 5 to 10 minutes between each customer or patient.

In the sick room

More and more institutions, such as elder care facilities, use diffusers. Thus relaxation is encouraged, germs on soiled bedding are destroyed, infections are prevented. The benefits accrue to patients and personnel alike.

Therapeutic use

Five to 10 minutes in a closed room or sick room. In the case of flu, bronchitis, pharyngitis, asthma, ear infection, and sore throat, diffusion discourages contagion. When used with a hot bath, the vapors released will vanquish germs. In the case of chronic respiratory problems, stress, anxiety, sluggish circulation, arthritis, rheumatism, genital-urinary infections, migraines, spasmophilia, or even digestive problems or bulimia, the counsel of an aromatherapist is necessary for selecting the essential oils.

When considering overall health, the physical, mental, social, and spiritual programmes all should be considered. Essential oils make up one element of the solution.

Cleaning the diffuser

When changing oils it is necessary to clean the diffuser: put a little alcohol underneath the air intake, turn on, purge, repeat the operation one or two times, then allow the diffuser to operate empty for a few minutes. It makes sense to wash the glass section of the device regularly in hot water using a liquid soap. Dry the glass before using again.
